Histoire de Vieux-Fort

Vieux-Fort is a charming place nestled in the shelter of the Caribbean mountains. It occupies the southern extremity of Guadeloupe; At the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean with the Caribbean Sea.
Its position and its rugged relief were solid defensive assets for its first inhabitants: the Amerindians, then the French who established a Fort as early as 1636.
These elements were however factors of isolation which hampered the development of the commune, at the time of the Economic development of the colony from the eighteenth century.
However, the municipality was able to profit opportunely from the situation created by the eruptive threats of the Soufrière in 1976, to bring the coastal road project towards Basse-Terre. It was able to break its isolation and lay the foundations for a new development.
